Für den dänischen Maler Asger Jorn (Mitbegründer der Künstlergruppe CoBrA und der Situationistischen Internationale) war diese Ausstellung von enormer Bedeutung. Sie fungierte als seine erste große internationale Retrospektive. Die Ausstellung fiel genau an das Ende jener Phase, die der… Kunsthistoriker Guy Atkins später als Jorns "Crucial Years" (1954 bis 1964) bezeichnete. Es waren die Jahre, in denen er seine vielleicht stärksten expressiven und gestischen Werke schuf. Die Schau in Basel war so erfolgreich und wichtig, dass Jorns Teil im Anschluss auf Tour ging. Sie reiste Ende 1964 weiter ins Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam und Anfang 1965 ins Louisiana Museum of Modern Art im dänischen Humlebæk. Viele von Jorns Meisterwerken (wie etwa das Gemälde Dichter & Denker) haben noch heute den Aufkleber der Basler Ausstellung von 1964 auf der Rückseite. Ihm gegenüber stand der französische Bildhauer Eugène Dodeigne (1923 bis 2015). Dodeigne war berühmt für seine monolithischen, archaischen Skulpturen, die er oft aus dem blaugrauen, rauen "Pierre de Soignies" (einem belgischen Kalkstein) schlug. Die Kombination der beiden Künstler war kuratorisch brillant. Auf der einen Seite wirkten Jorns wilde, farbgewaltige, geradezu explodierende Leinwände und auf der anderen Seite standen Dodeignes massive, blockhafte, fast urzeitlich wirkende Steinfiguren, bei denen die rohe Bearbeitungsspur des Meißels sichtbar blieb. Beide Künstler teilten eine raue, ungefilterte Expressivität, drückten diese aber in komplett gegensätzlichen Aggregatzuständen in Form von Farbe und Stein aus.
