Il cinquecentesimo anniversario della nascita di Jacopo Robusti, il «Tintoretto», è un evento che nel mondo della cultura, particolarmente a Venezia, non poteva non suscitare un acceso interesse e una viva curiosità perché Venezia e Tintoretto sono un… binomio che si tiene insieme. Tintoretto, infatti, certamente assieme a Tiziano, Veronese e altri, ma lui in modo particolare, ha illuminato il volto della Venezia cinquecentesca. Com'è noto, dal Rinascimento i mosaici ammalorati della basilica di San Marco furono ricostruiti anziché restaurati. La Repubblica saggiamente aveva disposto che pur rifacendo completamente le figure si dovesse mantenere il soggetto ivi rappresentato. Furono allora invitati i migliori pittori del tempo a predisporre i «cartoni» in grandezza naturale da cui i mosaicisti rifecero il mosaico, certamente con finissima cura, che però mutava il loro ruolo di artista in quello di artigiano. Nel 1568 Tintoretto fu chiamato a realizzare i «cartoni» per l'arco trionfale della basilica di San Marco tra la prima e la seconda cupola e per alcune pareti del transetto settentrionale. Si tratta di ampie superfici di grade prestigio. L'architetto Ettore Vio, per oltre trentacinque anni Proto della basilica, ha potuto accumulare una profonda conoscenza dell'arte e della tecnica del mosaico e un appassionato interesse che gli consente di evidenziare i valori sia formali che strutturali dell'apparato musivo. Con questo saggio è reso omaggio a Tintoretto. Libro.
