Soft Covers. Condition: NF. No Jacket. In Volume one Paul Beauchamp Legg explains the rationale for recording his myriad of experiences and adventures in a long association with aviation as being:"An attemp to put back into aviation some of the pleasures had from it and to share with others the thrilll and exhilaration of flight…." Vol 1 was first published late in 1994, with a second printing with minor corrections early the following year, with this copy from third printing in March that year with "more minor corrections." His book covers his recollections from 42 years of active flying, some of it as an instructor in NZ and Australia. It all began in 1949 with a hired Tiger Moth on a flight to Karamea with the aim of buying, transporting and selling whitebait back in the North Island. This was his introduction to "commercial" aviation and also to the West Coast where "bush flying" was legendry. His stories go back to the days of biplanes, not only for whitebait but for schedule passenger services too. Much of volume One concentrates of aviation events on the West Coast in the 1950s and '60s. Flying on the West Coast has its own unique qualities and the author's experienced required another book. It appeared in 1998 as an "extensive re-write of the original limited edition of Volume Two which was rushed our, primarily for the Westport Air Show in February 1997." The second volume covers a large area than the first and includes the stories of many others, not all pilots, "who contributed to the rich tapestry of life which is the success, or otherwise, of living onThe Coast." Thus, while the second volume has a wider scope than the first it continues the theme of recounting the history, adventures, experience, anecdotes and antics of the West Coast flying fraternity and associates, including the notorious "deer wars" era , an amazing deep lake diving expedition to recover a crashed Cessna after the pilot "returned for the dead" to reveal the location of the plane. Advances to commercial secheduled services on the Coast are noted, while the ever-present element of the special skills required for flying in the area is revealed again and again. These two books, a labour of love by the author and "'produced with comlete disregard for the commercial realities" will long remain a tangible tribute to the Coast's intrepid and innovative aviators who were so important to an area remote and often poorly serviced by transport services regraded as normal elsewehere. Both books were published privately by the author in 1994 and 1998 respectively, Vol 1 is 162 pages, Vol 2 is 222 pages incuding an index for that volume., each is illustrated throughout with b/w photos, mostly taken by the author. There are colour photograpns on the front cover both editions, Both books are in NF condition externally and internally and have the author's ink gift inscriptions, to the same recopient, on the title page, that for Volume Two made at the 2000 Wanaka Airshow. The books will be sold as a set only. Weight of the two books almost 1.2kg unpacked; accurate pricing for overseas delivery can be obtained from the seller. Photos, Maps Etc (illustrator). Both Vols By Author.
