Avec son cahier iconographique.Jean-Etienne-Dominique Esquirol naît le 3 février 1772 à Toulouse et meurt le 12 décembre 1840. D'abord orienté vers une carrière religieuse, il change de direction après la Révolution et revient en 1792 à Toulouse où il s'ini…tie à la médecine à l'hôpital de La Grave où est enfermé un certain nombre de malades mentaux. Puis il part pour Narbonne, participe à la guerre comme officier de santé. Il reprend ses études à Montpellier et arrive à Paris en 1799. Il y fréquente le service de Corvisart à La Charité et surtout celui de Pinel à La Salpêtrière. Il soutient sa thèse et devient médecin-surveillant, puis médecin-ordinaire à la division des folles à La Salpêtrière. Il avait, semble-t-il, commencé à accueillir vers 1817, des aliénés payants dans sa maison de la rue Buffon et devant le nombre croissant de ses malades, il acquiert un vaste domaine à Ivry pour y installer une maison de santé qu'il gère avec son neveu Mitivié. En 1825, à la mort de Royer-Collard, il devient médecin-chef à la Maison-Royale de Charenton. En 1826, il est désigné comme membre du Conseil d'hygiène publique et de salubrité du département de la Seine et participe aux travaux préparatoires de la loi de 1838.
