Allen dated April 1975 at lower two-thirds of ffep; short tear at bottom fore-edge corner of pages 135-136; laid-in between pages 186-187 is Sunday, March 14, 1976 "The Washington Star" newspaper article "A Long Visit With a Country Lawyer" by Willie Morris. Interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. A very good copy in a very good- dust jacket. Biography of United States Senator Sam Ervin of North Carolina who held that office from June 1954 to December 1974 and whose career overlapped with the book's inscribee James Allen, United States Senator from Alabama, who served from January 3, 1969 until his passing by heart attack on June 1, 1978. This book was acquired directly from the estate of Senator Allen's widow, Maryon Pittman Allen (1925-2018) who too served as U.S. Senator filling her husband's seat on an interim five month appointment by Governor George Wallace. United States Senator from North Carolina best remembered for chairing the U.S. Senate Watergate Hearings (1973 - 1974). The Senate Watergate Hearings literally made over-night stars out of certain politicians including Senators Sam Ervin, Fred Thompson, and Howard Baker. With their new-found fame each Senator discovered the immediate necessity of having to purchase an Autopen machine.
