New ISBN: 9789750855016 CATALOG: Archaeology KEYWORDS: Archaeology Anatolian civilizations Ionia Aegean The Ionians lived on the Aegean coast of Anatolia where they founded 12 cities along the shoreline extending from Phocaea in the north to Miletus in the south, and on the offshore islands of Samos and Chios. Although we refrain from calling them this today, it is understandable why the Ionians for a very long time were named "Eastern Greeks" in the literature. Ionia was considered peripheral to the core of the ancient Greek cultural geography. Still, many important historical events that shaped the culture and society we label as the Classical Greek civilization transpired in this region, and countless key figures were born and lived in the Land of Ionia. Natural philosophy, which forms the archaic foundations of Western philosophy, shows us how the Ionians perceived and observed the environment in which they lived. Thales and Anaximander of Miletus, Heraclitus of Ephesus, Anaxagoras of Clazomenae, and Xenophanes of Colophon were the pioneers of the Ionian school of philosophy. Also, Homer, the poet of the Iliad and the Odyssey, considered as the cornerstone of Western literature, was born and lived in Smyrna or Chios. Hippodamus, the namesake of the urban planning template, arguably based on the principle of equality before the law, isonomia, was also from Miletus. The undeniable influence of this small region located on the western Anatolian coast on the ancient Greek culture, which is considered the cornerstone of Western civilization, always makes it worth pondering about Ionia and the Ionians.
Condition: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Seiten: 268 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | As the role of the modern engineer is markedly different from that of even a decade ago, the theme of engineering mathematics educa tion (EME) is an important one. The need for mathematical model ling (MM) courses and consideration of the educational impact of computer-based technology environments merit special attention. This book contains the proceeding of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop held on this theme in July 1993. We have left the industrial age behind and have entered the in formation age. Computers and other emerging technologies are penetrating society in depth and gaining a strong influence in de termining how in future society will be organised, while the rapid change of information requires a more qualified work force. This work force is vital to high technology and economic competitive ness in many industrialised countries throughout the world. Within this framework, the quality of EME has become an issue. It is expected that the content of mathematics courses taught in schools of engineering today have to be re-evaluated continuously with regard to computer-based technology and the needs of mod ern information society. The main aim of the workshop was to pro vide a forum for discussion between mathematicians, engineering scientists, mathematics educationalists, and courseware develop ers in the higher education sector and to focus on the issues and problems of the design of more relevant and appropriate MM courses for engineering education.
