From the Translator's Note: 'This book deserves preservation in more than one language as a fascinating and in all essentials trustworthy record of an important…juncture in musical history, for Weissmann had a very real grasp of the musical situation of his time, and he was one of the few German critics who admit that the art of music is not their own country's exclusive concern, as indeed it never was, though it may have threatened to become so in the course of the nineteenth century. Already this book is a valuable historical document; in one hundred years and more musicians will look upon it as one of the most interesting sources of information on what they may perhaps regard as a period of significant upheaval.' And from the author's introduction: 'Once again I feel the urge to sum up my views. We find ourselves in the midst of fundamental subversions in the domain of art, and it is music, perhaps, which plays the greatest part in them. Nothing of the kind has ever happened before. The present state of music is here to be contemplated without any prejudice, and new perceptions are to be gained from the attempt. This, however, is possible only so long as music is not regarded as standing apart, but is strongly influenced by an increasingly powerful outside world. Music's coming down to earth need not be its ruin; but its conformance with this new world of machinery cannot but change it's very core.' Adolf Weissmann was the music critic of the Berliner Tageblatt and the Berliner Zeitung am Mittag. You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They have aged quite nicely, just a little crinkling at the spine ends and a wrinkle under the word 'Music' on the spine. The cover edges and corners are in excellent shape. The page edges look good. The gilt lettering on the spine has lost a little of its luster but still looks fine. The covers are very clean. The blue of the spine is lightened somewhat from the blue of the front and rear. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are in very good condition. They are very clean. I'm not finding any soiling. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book.
