Print. Condition: Very Good. This original, hand colored, engraving is from "The Scenery and Antiquities of Ireland" published by George Virtue, London, circa 1850. The scene was sketched by William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854) and engraved by Charles Cousen (1819 - 1889.) Dimensions including margins: 9.5" x 6.25". Light sun fading; no foxing; no chips or tears. Other colored illustrations from series available.

Framed and glazed. Print looks to be in very good order except for faint toning at the edge of the mount window although not examined out of the frame. Hand-coloured. Mount window 140 x 200 mm. Frame overall 255 x 315 mm. James Renwick being led to execution in the Grassmarket in 1688. Renwick was the last Covenanter to be martyred before the accession of William II secured Presbyterianism in Scotland in 1689. (Despite the accepted title of the painting, note that only one prisoner is shown.) 25.5 x 31.5 cm.

Very clean condition on thick paper. Image is 10 x 18 cm. Sheet is 26 x 15 cm. Would frame beautifully. The original pressed steel engraving , not a later issue. Such fine detail is hard to replicate. Paperback. No dj.

It is printed with warmer ink, somewhat more dramatic in mood, with fine, crisp detail, subtlety and elegance. In overall very good condition. (Some spotting.) Preserved in pH-balanced, acid-free Renaissance archival paper. ~ A delicately executed steel engraving, representing a major illustrative work on 19th century Palestine, Syria, and Asia Minor. William Henry Bartlett (born London, 1809) was one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation. He travelled extensively throughout Britain, the Americas, and the Middle East, producing his work on location. In 1854 he made his last trip to the Holy Land; he died of fever on board a French ship on his return voyage to England. Bartlett's primary concern was to extract the picturesque aspects of a place and render "lively impressions of actual sights", as he wrote in the preface to "The Nile Boat" (London, 1849). His work became widely known through the numerous engravings after the original drawings and paintings he made. The interest in these engravings today is as much for the exquisite quality of the rendering and presentation of the architecture of the period, as it is for the representation of the landscape. Published in 1836 by Peter Jackson, Late Fisher, Son & Co. of London, it was originally accompanied by descriptions written by John Carne. Clamshell.
