Condition: Very Good. Hard back binding in publisher's original raspberry cloth effect covered boards, gilt back, Chartreuse end papers. 8vo. 9'' x 6''. Known as the 'Queen of Cooks', her culinary skills were highly prized by Edward VII, with whom she was rumoured to have had an affair in the 1890s. She was also called 'The Duchess of Jermyn Street.' It is said that some of the scenes in Vile Bodies by Evelyn Waugh were inspired by the Cavendish Hotel under Lewis' management, in which she appears as her fictional counterpart Lottie Crump. Contains colour frontispiece, 208 pp with monochrome archive photographs throughout. Very Good condition book in Very Good condition dust wrapper with rubbing to the corners and spine ends, price clipped. Dust wrapper supplied in archive acetate film protection. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 1p, 12mo. In good condition, slightly discoloured, with traces of grey paper mount adhering to the blank reverse. Folded once for postage. The year is not given, but the water mark appears to read '[18]21'. Good clear signature. Fielding writes: 'My Dear Madam, / I shall have much pleasure in shewing you the pictures which I have prepared for the Exhibition, should it be agreeable to Mrs. Sharp & yourself to come to Newman at any hour on Monday or Tuesday next, & I hope you will do me the favour of persuading Mr Sharp to accompany you. / I remain, My Dear Madam, / Yours very faithful Servant / Copley Fielding'.

STORY: The distinguished country gentleman Allworthy, who lives in Somersetshire with his unmarried sister Bridget Allworthy, arrives home from a trip to London to discover a baby boy in is bed. Captain Blifil regards Tom Jones with jealousy, since he wishes his son to inherit all of Allworthy possessions.

4pp., 12mo. Paginated to 4. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. On laid paper watermarked 'A PIRIE & SONS | 1883'. Tastefully printed. In Dobson's brightest style, the poem begins: 'Not from the ranks of those we call | Philosopher or Admiral, - | Neither as LOCKE was, nor as BLAKE, | Is that GREAT GENIUS for whose sake | We keep this Autumn festival.' Fielding is praised as 'Our ENGLISH NOVEL's pioneer!', who 'stepped lower down and took | The piebald PEOPLE for his Book!' In what is perhaps the most vivid passage Dobson writes: 'Whose are the characters that give | Such sound reality? - that live | With such full pulse? Fair SOPHY yet | Carols St. George at the spinet; | We see AMELIA cooking still | That supper for the recreant WILL; | We hear Squire WESTON's headlong tones | Bawling "Wut ha? - wut ha?" to JONES. | Are they not present now to us, - | The Parson with his Aeschylus? | SLIPSLOP the frail, and NORTHERTON, | PARTRIDGE, and BATH, and HARRISON? - | Are they not breathing, moving, - all | The motley, merry carnival | That FIELDING kept, in days agone?'
