The map depicts the region from Harrington, near the Lake District, to Blackpool, a seaside resort town. Myriad depth soundings are included all along the coas…tline and highly detailed illustrations of the Duddon Estuary and Morecambe Bay are present. The Dudden Channel is marked in the Duddon Estuary, along with the Ulverstone Channel, Grange Channel, and Haysham Lake in Morecambe Bay. Coastal towns are labeled throughout the region, including Harrington, Whitehaven, St. Bees, Ravenglass, Barrow, Ulverstone, Lancaster, Fleetwood, and Blackpool. Points, heads, and other coastal landmarks are also labeled, and the lighthouses are indicated by yellow and red circles. Navigational notes are included at certain points between Harrington and Blackpool. Coast railways, including the Whitehaven and Furness Railway, the Furness Railway, the Ulverstone and Lancaster Railway, and the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway are illustrated and labeled as well. Little inland detail is shown, however three charming coastal views and a view of the Monument to Sir. J. Barrow, Secretary to the Admiralty, are situated in the inland portion of the map. The content for this map was originally surveyed by Captain H. Denham and Commander G. Williams in 1846 and Staff Commander Richards resurveyed Morecambe Bay in 1871. This is an extremely rare 1823 Thomas Atkinson nautical chart or maritime map of the entrance to Portsmouth Harbor, England. Oriented toward the west, the map depicts the coastline from the blockhouse fort across the channel from Portsmouth proper… to Southsea Castle, with the shoals in the English Channel making up at least three-quarters of the map. Depths in feet at low tide are noted throughout, with shading indicating areas under 10 feet, 14 feet, and 20 feet, respectively. Census and Publication History This chart was created from surveys undertaken by Thomas Atkinson, John Osman, and Thomas Brown and published in 1823. This is an exceedingly rare chart, as we have been unable to locate any examples in institutional collections or any known market history.

This is an 1881 U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey nautical chart or maritime map of the northern Atlantic coastline of the United States. The map depicts the Atlantic coastline from the Isle au Haut and P…enobscot Bay, Maine to Cape Cod and Kingston, Massachusetts and from the coastline into the Atlantic Ocean as far as Cashe's Ledge and Jeffrey's Bank. A highly detailed depiction of the coastline, all of the river mouths islands, and islets are illustrated in detail. Innumerable depth soundings are included all along the coast. Lighthouses have all been shaded yellow. Cities and towns along the coast are labeled, including Bangor, Kennebunkport, and Portland, Maine; Portsmouth, New Hampshire; and Newburyport, Salem, and Boston, Massachusetts. A table of light houses, with latitude and longitude, character of the light, the time between flashes, the distance at which the light is visible (in nautical miles) and other information included is situated on the upper left. Information about buoys, 'life saving stations', tides, and soundings, and other information important to the mariner is included below the table containing the information about light houses. An impressive 1800 George Burn and Laurie and Whittle large format blueback nautical map of the entrance to the Thames River, England. A Closer Look The map covers parts of Kent, Essex, and Suffolk. It details the Entrance to the Thames River with its…many shoals and coastal communities. A small inset map at the top of the chart continues the map westward from Canvey Island to London, with depth soundings and river towns noted. Throughout there are thousands of depth soundings in fathoms. The map is dedicated to Lord Viscount Adam Duncan (1731 - 1804). Duncan was a British admiral famous for defeating the Dutch fleet off Camperton on October 11 of 1797. Duncan was awarded the Large Naval Gold Medal and an annual pension of £3,000, to himself and the next two heirs to his title - this was the biggest pension ever awarded by the British government. Additionally, he was given the freedom of several cities, including Dundee and London. Laurie and Whittle, no doubt sensing a potential patron with influence at the Hydrographic Office, chose this apt map to court his attention. Blueback Charts Blueback nautical charts began appearing in London in the late 18th century. Bluebacks, as they came to be called, were privately published large-format nautical charts known for their distinctive blue paper backing. The backing, a commonly available blue manila paper traditionally used by publishers to wrap unbound pamphlets, was adopted as a practical way to reinforce the low-quality paper used by private chart publishers to cut costs. That being said, not all blueback charts are literally backed with blue paper, some are unbacked or backed with linen. Moreover, as blueback charts which were typically composed of multiple sheets, they were designed in a modular fashion, so that multiple charts could be joined to create truly massive custom maps suited for specific voyages. The earliest known blueback charts include a 1760 chart issued by Mount and Page, and a 1787 chart issued by Robert Sayer. The tradition took off in the early 19th century, when British publishers like John Hamilton Moore, Robert Blachford, James Imray, William Heather, John William Norie, Charles Wilson, David Steel, R. H. Laurie, and John Hobbs, among others, rose to dominate the chart trade. Bluebacks became so popular that the convention was embraced by chartmakers outside of England, including Americans Edmund March Blunt and George Eldridge, as well as Scandinavian, French, German, Russian, and Spanish chartmakers. Blueback charts remained popular until the late 19th century, when government-subsidized organizations like the British Admiralty Hydrographic Office and the United States Coast Survey, began issuing their own superior charts on high-quality paper that did not require reinforcement. This is Edmund Blunt's rare, monumental 1840 nautical chart or map of the northeast United States, extending from New York to Cape Canso in Nova Scotia, and is the most authoritative American chart of these wa…ters available at the time. It provides not only granular detail of the coastline, but also detailed soundings for the crucial sailing lanes from Halifax to Boston. It is a working chart - typically referred to as a 'blueback chart' due to the color of the reinforcing paper it was originally mounted to. Rather than contend with multiple charts, mariners typically preferred large charts composed of several sheets: hence the impressive expanse of the present chart. The Main Chart This chart covers from Barnigat Lighthouse on the Jersey Shore to the Cranberry Island Lighthouse east of Cape Canso and extends farther east to include Sable Island and the Sable Island bank. As such, the chart is an essential tool for navigators making the transatlantic crossing from England and Ireland via Halifax. The Insets The chart includes minutely-detailed insets of essential harbors, including Halifax Harbor, Cape Cod Harbor, Buzzards Bay, and Boston Harbor. Three of these - all but Cape Cod - rely on the still authoritative (though rapidly aging) charts of the great nautical cartographer J. F. W. DesBarres. The Cape Cod chart, exhaustively sounded, is early work of the topographical engineer James Duncan Graham. Blueback Charts Blueback nautical charts began appearing in London in the late 18th century. Bluebacks, as they came to be called, were privately published large format nautical charts known for their distinctive blue paper backing. The backing, a commonly available blue manila paper traditionally used by publishers to wrap unbound pamphlets, was adopted as a practical way to reinforce the low-quality paper used by private chart publishers trying to cut costs. The earliest known blueback charts include a 1760 chart issued by Mount and Page and a 1787 chart issued by Robert Sayer. The tradition took off in the early 19th century, when British publishers like John Hamilton Moore, Robert Blachford, James Imray, William Heather, John William Norie, Charles Wilson, David Steel, R. H. Laurie, and John Hobbs, among others, rose to dominate the chart trade. Bluebacks became so popular that the convention was embraced by chartmakers outside of England, including Americans Edmund March Blunt and George Eldridge, as well as Scandinavian, French, German, Russian, and Spanish chartmakers. Blueback charts remained popular until the late 19th century, when government subsidized organizations, such as the British Admiralty Hydrographic Office and the United States Coast Survey, began issuing their own superior charts on high quality paper that did not require reinforcement. Publication History and Census This scarce chart was executed in 1828, when Blunt's workshops were located at 154 Water Street on the corner of Maiden Lane. This example, with the notation that it has been corrected to 1840, shows the firm's new address of 179 Water Street, at the Southeast corner of Burling Slip. 1848 examples of this chart, for example the copy at the New York Public Library, show this address but with significantly altered typography in the title, suggesting more drastic changes to the chart beyond the title. We see five examples of the 1828 edition in OCLC, with two further copies of the 1844 edition and two of the 1848. We see no examples of the present 1840 edition in any institutional collections.
