Yet it was a period of unusual socio-political and linguistic upheaval for Germany. This history of discourse in the Weimar Republic outlines in narrative form the extremely contentious socio-political discourses of the time, which were in part resurrected or continued in the post-war Federal Republic: in volume 1 disputes about the national flag and the political system, the discourse of armament and defence policy, the debates about economic and social policy, European policy and the place of women; in volume 2 the controversies over anti-Semitism, abortion, marriage law and homosexuality as well as censorship and types of schooling. Among the studies surprising findings is the fact that it was not only the Nazi seizure of power that led to the suppression of debate: many of the discourses contested at the time had already been broken off during the years of the international economic crisis.

On the other hand, any memorial devoted to the Holocaust is predicated on the notion that the only way to ensure that such a thing does not happen again is to bear witness and thereby 'bring the living and the dead together'. But how can something that cannot be represented be remembered or witnessed This book is an analysis of the history of various sorts of representation, chiefly memorials, on the site of the concentration camps Dachau and Buchenwald in comparison with Auschwitz, Yad Vashem and the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. It is a study of how the boundaries of representation and the rhetoric of artifacts changed during the transformation of these places.
