Born in Brühl, Germany, Engel's early life was marked by service in the Wehrmacht during World War II, where he endured multiple injuries and the loss of his parents in a 1945 air raid. After the war, Engel pursued higher education at the University of Cologne, initially focusing on German studies before shifting to history under the mentorship of scholars such as Gerhard Kallen, Peter Rassow, and Theodor Schieder. He earned his doctorate in 1950 with a dissertation on Jacob Burckhardt's worldview and later habilitated in 1958 with a study on the congress system and European state relations. Engel's academic career included positions at the University of Mainz and later at the University of Tübingen, where he succeeded Hans Rothfels as Professor of Medieval and Modern History. His research interests encompassed the history of international law, the development of the European state system, and historical cartography. Notably, he edited the Mittelalter (Middle Ages) and Neuzeit (Modern Times) volumes of the widely used GroÃer Historischer Weltatlas (Great Historical World Atlas) , published by the Bavarian Schoolbook Publishing House. Engel also contributed significantly to the history of science, exemplified by his 1959 article Die deutschen Universitäten und die Geschichtswissenschaft ("The German Universities and the Science of History") in the Historische Zeitschrift. He co-initiated the Collaborative Research Center on the Late Middle Ages and Reformation, supported by the German Research Foundation, and served as its deputy spokesperson. Engel's scholarly legacy includes his extensive work on the transition from the medieval res publica Christiana to the modern European state system, particularly his comprehensive 1971 essay in the Handbuch der europäischen Geschichte (Handbook of European History). Josef Engel's contributions have left a lasting impact on the fields of historical research and cartography, providing valuable insights into Europe's complex historical landscape.
