Wrappers. Condition: Good. Bishop Museum Press, Published 1969. Wraps, 129 pp. plus 23 pp of plates; 26 cm; reprint of the 1924 edition; illustrated with black-and-white photographic plates and line drawings, with two fold-out maps in a pocket at the rear. In Good condition. Illustrated stiff card wraps with light bumping and cr…easing to edges and corners and mild shelf and edge wear; light soiling to rear cover and some color loss along edges and spine. Binding tight. Previous owner's name stamped inside the front cover and on the title page; faint coffee-ring stain to the inside front cover. Pages mildly toned, otherwise clean and unmarked. Both fold-out maps (Map of Lanai; Kaunolu village ruins) present in the original pocket affixed to the inside rear cover. Kenneth P. Emory (1897-1992), long the Bishop Museum's authority on Pacific archaeology, surveyed Lanai on horseback over the winter of 1921-22; the resulting monograph, first published in 1924 as Bulletin 12, is regarded as the first settlement-pattern study in Polynesia, anticipating by some four decades an approach that would later become standard in the field. It records the island's heiaus, house sites, fishing shrines, and petroglyphs (the Luahiwa survey unsurpassed until 1970), together with native oral traditions and a full gazetteer of place names, and includes Emory's detailed mapping of the protohistoric village of Kaunolu. This is the Bishop Museum Press reprint. Contents: Introduction; Native traditions; Place names; Dwelling sites; Village sites; Structures for worship (heiaus); Burial sites; Fortifications; Stone artifacts; Shell and ivory artifacts; Objects of wood; Petroglyphs; Summary; Bibliography.
