Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Very Good. (Optical Toys) ORIGINAL EMILE REYNAUD "LE PRAXINOSCOPE" SHADE FROM CIRCA 1878. [Paris]: [Emile Reynaud], circa 1878. 7" diameter x 2-1/2" high, with 2-1/4" diameter opening at top. Six rose-colored thin card panels with titles and decoration printed in gilt, connected together with vertical linen strips on back side of cards, with minor rubbing, soiling and wear, for what is still a lovely example, and rare survival, of this early optical toy shade. The "Praxinoscope" was invented by Emile Reynaud in 1876. It was an improvement to the earlier "zoetrope." A shade with the exact same design can be seen in the Richard Balzer Collection online under the heading "Optical Toys: Praxinoscope Theatres." The condition of the shade is VERY GOOD. RARE. …

Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Very Good. Nature, November 16, 1882. Occupying pp 60-61 in the issue of pp 49-72. Removed from a larger bound volume, though still quite nice, and crisp and bright./++/This short article in the November 16, 1882 issue of Nature reports on the invention of the "lampascope" by Emile Reynaud. Reynaud (1844-1918) builds on his own invention of the praxinoscope (1878) which in turn had continued earlier ideas of the zoetrope and phenakistiscope--all of which are very early animation devices and considered a part of prehistoric film history--allowing a projection of the moving images, and turning the personal viewing experience into a shared one. Reynaud worked on the invention through the decade, making adjustments and improvements, leading to his first public demonstration of the device in his Theatre Optique in 1892, which is just at the beginning of the filmed motion picture history. It was an elegant idea, and certainly for the time it would have been a major attraction and popular "philosophical toy".…

[.]". - A few small tears to margins. Add to basket[Paris], [Ateliers Gustave Marion], circa 1889. I, p. 21.…
