First edition, association copy presented by a member of the Teichmann family on the front free endpaper: "J. W. Thompson, d.d., [?] Teichmann, 1926". This is one of the earliest accounts of Alaska as a newly formed state, shortly after its cession to the United States in 1867; scarce in commerce. In 1868 Teichmann (1845-1924),…entered the New York branch of Messrs. J.M. Oppenheim & Co., the leading fur merchants of London. During that time the company had monopoly on the Alaskan seal fur trade, working with the Russian-American company to deliver the yearly yield. This lucrative business collaboration came in jeopardy with the Alaska Purchase in 1867, where the state was bought from Russia for $7.2 million. The Russian-American company went into liquidation thus jeopardizing its contract with the Oppenheim Co., which was to run until the end of 1868; Teichmann was sent to Alaska to prevent any loss of revenue. Upon his arrival in Sitka "in view of the secret nature of his mission, he adopted the role of a slightly eccentric naturalist. In this dirty but friendly frontier town, among the still present Russians and the newly-arrived Americans, the young Englishman, after various adventures and seemingly hopeless dead ends, at last succeeded, through bribery and perseverance, in completing his mission. After six weeks in Sitka he returned to San Francisco. After the author's death in 1924, his son, Oskar, prepared a typewritten English version based upon the first two versions. This was privately published in 1925, in a very abbreviated form" (University of Chicago Library). Teichmann went from New York via Panama to Sitka, returning to London via San Francisco. He makes detailed observations of the Metlakatla, Sitka, and Aleutian Native American communities, with a brief dictionary of the Tshimpsean language. Provenance: the recipient, J.W. Thompson, and the Teichmann family member both remain stubbornly elusive. With an additional presentation inscription on the front free endpaper: "Given by Andrew Westwater to H.E. Eburne, August 7th, 1953". Eburne, a Methodist Minister, was a teacher at Oka County Indian Day School, Quebec, from 1927-9. A pencil note on the same page notes a passing of ownership, likely from J.W. Thompson to Andrew Westwater, on 1 January 1944. Howes T88; University of Chicago Library, Guide to the Emil Teichmann Papers 1868-1925, 2018, accesible online. Octavo. With half-tone photographic frontispiece of Emil Teichmann, numerous maps and illustrations in the text. Original white cloth-backed brown cloth boards, brown sheep label lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. Spine toned and lightly soiled, minor loss and repair to label, lower corner of front cover bumped with neat repair, scattered foxing. A very good copy.
