Kupfertitel und 12 Kupferstiche alte geheftet, ohne Umschlag Komplette Folge zu den zwölf Monaten, dabei jeweils die typischen Tätigkeiten der Jahreszeit und mittig ein Gleichnis Jesu mit dem Bibeltext dazu unten. Häufig in kleinen Kartuschen noch emblematische Darstellungen dazu. Die Kupfer sehr detailliert und fein ausgeführt, oft mit Architektur oder weiten Landschafts- und Idealstadt-Veduten. Der Kupfertitel vor dem Januar-Blatt zeigt die Könige David und Salomon jeweils an Tischen mit Büchern, mittig im Hintergrund der predigende Jesus. - Gut erhalten, kaum gebräunt, Rotschnitt leicht in die Ränder gehend, sonst sauber und schön.

Diego de Saavedra Fajardo (* 6. Mai 1584 in Algezares; gest. 24. August 1648 in Madrid) war ein spanischer Schriftsteller und Diplomat. Saavedras Hauptwerk ist die in Deutschland verfasste und 1640 in Münster veröffentlichte Idea de un Príncipe político cristiano representada en cien empresas. Als Ganzes betrachtet ist sie die beste spanische politische Abhandlung des 17. Jahrhunderts und wurde als eine von vielen geschrieben, um die dekadente und instabile Monarchie zu stützen. Das Werk wurde ins Lateinische und viele europäische Sprachen übersetzt und erschien in mehreren Ausgaben, zuletzt von Vicente Garcia de Diego im Jahr 1927. Es gibt 101 Kapitel, die empresas genannt werden (ein Name, der im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert eine Kunst und eine weit verbreitete künstliche Literaturgattung bezeichnete). Ein jedes Kapitel beginnt mit einem impresa, d. h. eine symbolische, allegorische Zeichnung mit einem lateinischen Motto. Das eine wie das andere mit einer ethischen und politischen Bedeutung gibt jede von ihnen Material und Argumente für einen Artikel, der die ethischen und politischen Qualitäten umreißt, die einen imaginären perfekten Prinzen, den Prototyp des christlichen Prinzen, schmücken müssen. Préfacé et commenté par l'historien Paul Hachenberg, ce texte est en réalité de Charles II, prince-électeur du Palatinat (1651-1685) qui, sous le pseudonyme de Philotheus, livre ici un ouvrage de référence en matière d'emblèmes. Ce graveur suisse avait été l'élève de Jacques Callot et épousa la fille de Theodor de Bry. Chaque emblème est accompagné d'un quatrain en français. Le texte de Julius Wilhelm Zincgref (1591-1635) se trouve en regard. Sa préface traite de l'origine et de l'usage des emblèmes. Provenances : Christophe Finance (signature contemporaine sur le titre). Cette édition est strictement identique à la première de 1619. Pour une raison obscure une plume a anciennement ajouté un X à la date, mais il s'agit bien de l'édition de 1624. Papier un peu bruni, très fin travail de vers dans la marge sur une quinzaine de feuillets en début d'ouvrage et une dizaine vers la fin, mais très bon exemplaire, frais. In-4 de (8), 100, (2) ff. This Swiss engraver was a pupil of Jacques Callot and married the daughter of Theodor de Bry. Each emblem is accompanied by a quatrain in French. The text by Julius Wilhelm Zincgref (1591-1635) faces the illustrations. His preface discusses the origin and use of emblems. Provenance: Christophe Finance (contemporary signature on the title page). This edition is identical to the first edition of 1619. For some unknown reason, a pen has added an X to the date, but this is indeed the 1624 edition. The paper is slightly browned, with very fine worm damage in the margin on about fifteen pages at the beginning of the book and about ten towards the end, but it is a very good copy, fresh. A collection of 14 engraved plates from 3 different emblematic works and a work on monograms, all published by Johann Christoph Weigel (1661-1726) in Nürnberg. Praz and others attribute items 2-4 to his father, the great Nürnberg engraver Christoph Weigel (1654-1725), who may have engraved their plates, though item 4 may have appeared shortly after his death. With the 18th-century bookplate of Charles Pierre Joseph Le Candèle; the ca. 1900 bookplate of the Hale family, Alderly House, Gloucestershire; and the blind stamp of the Liberna collection of Bernard Brenninkmeijer (1893-1976) on second free endleaf.Item 4 appears to have been printed from slightly worn copper plates. With an occasional spot, slightly affecting 2 monograms in item 1, but still with all plates in good or very good condition. The binding is somewhat worn but still good.
