Sea como fuere, ni el jazz, en su conjunto, ni probablemente buena parte de la música contemporánea serían explicables sin Ellington; y él mismo seguiría siendo un misterio de no ser por este alegato prepóstumo, puesto que el gran compositor fue terco enemigo siempre de la literatura confesional (hasta que un cheque in extremis lo indujo a ceder cuando su vida ya se agotaba). Siempre que el compositor hacía referencia a este texto subrayaba que «se asemejaba más a una de sus actuaciones que a unas memorias». A decir verdad, nunca quiso prestarse a componer una autobiografía al uso; y es preciso aclarar, en su descargo, que se salió con la suya. A fin de acometer el encargo a su manera ùel libro vería la luz en 1973, año escaso antes de su muerteù resolvió dividir.
