Add to basketCondition: Very Good Minus. First Edition. Beautiful, sometimes perhaps kitschy, Victorian designs of a wide variety, incorporating birds, flowers, fruits, seraphs, etc. into vertical ornamentation to be applied to doors. The product was something like a wallpaper, but for a small area, and it was intended to suggest the kind or… elaborate ornamentation to be found in grand palaces and apartments, but at a fraction of the cost. Within the purse-like portfolio are sixteen loose color plates, each representing a four paneled door with a particular design. The plates have translucent tissue guards attached, and these one pulls up and to a side to reveal the brilliant chromolithographic design underneath. The primary text is on the inside of the three panels of the portfolio, with general info about the panels, then a list of the designs contained within, and finally, some pricing info. Scarce, with only three copies listed on OCLC First Search, and we could find none in commerce on the date we did this description. While such a catalogue might be surprising to those who know Raphael Tuck as a publisher of children's books, the publisher was known for its facility with chromolithography, and thus the additional line of product is entirely consistent with that expertise. The plates are somewhat brittle, and there has thus been some chipping, with some edges therefore rough. No loss to the pictorial content. The portfolio has some staining and color loss or dulling. The gilt impressed writing on the leatherette has also faded. Purse-like Portfolio, three boards with two folds, and a third panel, half the size of the others, rests on top of the most distant panel when the portfolio is open. The exterior has a leatherette pastedown. W.S. Coleman; Ellen Welby; Bertha Maguire; Professor Chelazzi; Kate Sadler. (illustrator).
