"It is 1842 in the bustling frontier village of Milwaukee, in the Wisconsin Territory. Immigrants arrive by steamship, to be greeted by the sound of cowbells from animals wandering the muddy "downtown" streets. It is the year that Asahel Finch and William Pitt Lynde, both recent arrivals from the East, decide to become partners in the practice of law. Finch is a native New Yorker whose previous entrepreneurial efforts in frontier Michigan collapsed in the Panic of 1837, driving him farther west. Also a New Yorker, Lynde had come to Milwaukee to practice law with his two older brothers, but they perished in one of the many shipwrecks on the Great Lakes. Finch and Lynde maintained their partnership and friendship for as long as they both lived, despite strong political differences. They even ran against each other once - in 1848 - as the Whig and Democratic candidates for Congress. (They both lost, to an abolitionist.) The law firm they founded has blossomed into one of the finest law firms in the country. Now known as Foley & Lardner, the firm of Finch & Lynde has grown from two lawyers in Milwaukee to 450 in Milwaukee and ten other cities, in five states and the District of Columbia. This is the story of their firm's first 150 years." - from the inner front jacket flap.
