The spine has wear (small surface loss) to its extremities, else remains solid (It is obvious that some minor mending has been neatly effected at the foot of the spine). The issue is signed in pencil on the front cover (Calvin Rood, who lived in Oneida County). The interior, displays some general surface creasing, and scattered small spots, smudges &etc - nothing egregious - else interior is clean and free of marking. No writing. No underlining or marginalia.

Mostly it was excerpts from works - both magazine and books - published elsewhere in the United States and Europe; in fact it may be considered as a nineteenth century precursor to "Reader's Digest". At time…s correspondents purported to share material, and sometimes there appeared original works. Sometimes there were bits and snatches of literary news; there were sundry various poems by individuals, many of whom are now mostly forgotten. But Sometimes there were issued key articles, of high interest in the time they were published, and , frequently, of keen interest to modern readers and historians. Hence in this issue there is a poem entitled "Wreck of the Arctic", (incidentally by Thomas Kibble Hervey, although he is not credited in the issue). This poem was originally issued in Charles Dickens' "Household Words", which was credited. The poem was in reaction to the tragic Franklin Expedition in search of the Northwest Passage. The longest piece in the issue is on Cardinal Mezzofanti, a great celebrity in his own time, but now relegated to the dusty shelves of history. Of more interest to modern historians is the article titled "A Honolulu Newspaper" (approximately 3 pages in length). The newspaper was titled the "New Era and Weekly Argus", and is fairly completely described. Described also is the then current parliamentary government of the Hawaiian Islands (fashioned after English and American models). The Hawaiian Islands were still a Kingdom, and King Kamehameha III ruled… beneficently, it seems. The 'glorious future' of Hawaiian commerce, and rumors of an American annexation of the islands are discussed. The Crimean War, the struggles between Russia and England, France, and Turkey are also discussed …even in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
