Softbound. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Quarto, paper covers, 80 pp., b/w and color illustrations, list of binders, map, glossary, select bibliography One of the few works on this subject. Torah binders or wimpels are textiles made from the cloth which covers the new-born male during the circumcision ceremony. This is largely a phenomenon of the Jews of the German speaking lands. These cloths were cut into (usually) narrow ribbons and embroidered with a notice of the details of the birth and with decorative illustrations and designs. They were then used as a cinch to tie the two sides of the Torah scroll together when the Torah was placed back in the ark.

Softbound. Condition: Very Good. Oblong royal octavo, stapled paper covers, 16 pp., b/w illustrations From the author - "I pull aside the curtain and show you an image of the artist pulling aside the curtain. I've also dwelt lovingly over the drawing of that curtain and other veils which I have used to catch meanings in a skein of time and memory. I am possessed by the images of survivors, children, ladies in waiting, the mute Pierrot, Carnival revelers, and aging dancers. I am nourished by the history of the Jews, the history of Art, and by the unwritten history of women.".
