It is estimated that the Chilean population in California during the gold rush reached 7,000 - in the early years, they represented the 2nd largest foreign contingent. Many of these Chileans were highly educat…ed, including some of the most famous writers of their country - so their writings are sophisticated, perceptive and often laced with a wry humor. Photographs, bibliography and biographical information about the writers. Very near fine in black cloth, lacking the dust jacket.

First (1st) Printing of the First Modern Library edition as evidenced by the following: (1) "Modern Library Edition, February 1969" stated on copyright page; (2) Fujita endpapers (subse…quent printings have blank endpapers); (3) Toledano Binding Style 13 (Spine all in silver, Fujita torchbearer and 4 7/8" x 7 3/8") . Fine in a Fine- mylar-protected Dust Jacket. The Text Block is clean, white, tight, straight and square with no markings of any kind. The Binding is full dark blue cloth, color uniform throughout, with blindstamped lowercase "ml" inscribed within large blindstamped single line design to the front board, bright silver title, etc., to the spine, unmarked green and light yellow Fujita endpapers, and all corners square and sharp, bottom front corner showing light wear. The mylar-protected Dust Jacket (Toledano Back Style Gi) is bright, colors uniform throughout, and price clipped with a small tear at the top rear fold discreetly closed from behind with archival pH neutral materials. See the photos. xvii, 481, [ix] pages, including an Appendix with a Continuation of the Manuscript, Another Version of the Opening Paragraphs, Fragments and Passages Deleted by the Author. 4 7/8" x 7 3/8". Text Translated from the German Das Schloss along with the Homage by Thomas Mann by Willa and Edwin Muir; the additional sections have been translated by Eithne Wilkins and Ernst Kaiser. The author's last novel, it was originally published in German in 1926. Kafka died before he could finish the work and the novel was posthumously published against his wishes, hence the problems establishing a definitive text. Dark and surreal, the novel is about alienation in a world increasingly dominated by bureaucracy and totalitarianism.
