Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. THE HARROUN SITE, A FULTON ASPECT COMPONENT OF THE CADDOAN AREA, UPSHUR COUNTY, TEXAS (Archaeology Series, No. 2) by Edward B. Jelks and Curtis D. Tunnell, softcover, illustrated with photos, maps, charts, 1959. BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block is in fine conditi…on with no tears, marks, or dog-ears. There is no bookplate but the signature of a prior owner is written inside the front cover and back cover. This is not a library book nor a remainder. Good 2-staple binding. The green wraps are in good condition (wrinkle in lower left hand corner of front cover, slight rubbing on front cover, discolored area on back cover). 9 x 6, 69 pages, 5 ounces XX [From the introduction] The Harroun Site (University of Texas Site No. 41 U RIO), in the extreme northeastern corner of Upshur County, Texas, is one of several sites excavated in the Ferrell's Bridge Reservoir area as a part of the Inter-Agency Archeological Salvage Project. The site, which consisted of four small mounds on the south floodplain of Cypress Creek, was located and recorded by E. Mott Davis and Bernard Golden in October, 1957. It promised to produce valuable archeological data, and since it was scheduled to be completely submerged by Ferrell's Bridge Reservoir in the summer of 1959, immediate steps were taken to provide for salvage excavations prior to its inundation. In December, 1957, a National Park Service field party excavated the smallest of the four mounds, Mound A. A single extended burial containing two pottery vessels and an arrow point, was found in a shallow grave beneath the mound. It appeared that Mound A had been erected for the purpose of covering the burial. While Mound A was being excavated, the entire site was mapped, several trenches and test pits were dug in the floodplain of Cypress Creek near Mound A, and some of the trees and bushes were cleared from the other three mounds. In September, 1958, under terms of a co-operative agreement between The University of Texas and the National Park Service, a crew of the Texas Archeological Salvage Project returned to Harroun to complete the investigation of the site. Because of time limitations it was apparent that all three of the remaining mounds (B, C, and D) could not be entirely excavated. Therefore, it was decided to concentrate on Mound C since it appeared superficially to be the least disturbed of the three. After excavation of Mound C was well under way, a portion of the crew was moved to Mound B and it was also opened. Both mounds were found to contain burned remains of house structures.

XX [From the Texas Water Development Board website] Wright Patman Lake (formerly known as Texarkana Reservoir or Lake Texarkana) is located about eleven miles southwest of Texarkana in Bowie and Cass Counties, TX on the Sulphur River, a tributary of the Red River in Arkansas. As a part of the comprehensive flood control plan on the Red River below Denison Dam, Texarkana Dam and Reservoir was authorized by the Flood Contract Act of 1946 (Public Law 526, 79th Congress, 2nd Session) and was constructed beginning on August 20, 1948. The Sulphur River was blocked and water was routed through the control structures on July 2, 1953. The reservoir had been operated as a temporary detention basin until June 27, 1956, at which time the gates were closed and intentional impoundment was started. On December 15, 1973, President Nixon signed H.R. 945, officially designating the project as "Wright Patman Dam and Lake" in honor of Congressman John William Wright Patman (1893-1976) of the First Congressional District of Texas. The lake is owned by the United States Government and is operated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The drainage area of 3,400 square miles above the dam site covers approximately 91 percent of the Sulphur River Basin above the Red River.

[From the introduction]: In the 1850s a chain of forts was established by the United States Army along the main road between San Antonio TX and Santa Fe NM. Regular travel over the road had begun in the late 1840s when the close of the Mexican war paved the way for Anglo American settlement of the far Southwest. Then, after the opening of the California goldfields in 1849, traffic on the San Antonio - Santa Fe Rd became so brisk that the army was called on to protect the travelers from the Apaches, Comanches, and other Indians that frequented the area. Fort Lancaster was one of the forts designed to provide that protection. Situated in the Pecos River Valley in present day Crockett County, Texas, this military outpost was established in 1855 and was abandoned by its federal garrison at the beginning of the civil war in 1861.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. EXCAVATIONS AT THE LAURENS SITE: PROBABLE LOCATION OF FORT DE CHARTRES I. (Studies in Illinois Archaeology No. 5), edited by Edward B. Jelks, Carl J. Ekberg, and Terrance J. Martin, softcover, illustrated, 1989. ITEM CONDITION: near fine. The text block and illustrations are in fine c…ondition with no tears, dog-ears, or marks. There is no bookplate nor signature of a prior owner. A gift inscription from one of the authors is written on the half-title page. This is not a library item nor a remainder. The wraps are in near fine condition. 9 x 6, 136 pages, 14 ounces XX [From the back cover] The Laurens site lies near the southern end of the extensive French Colonial Historic District, which includes a number of early French Colonial and historic Indian sites in southwestern Illinois. This study is part of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency's continuing research and management of those French Colonial historic resources. Fort de Chartres I, the first of three forts to bear the name, was constructed in 1719-1720 on the banks of the Mississippi River in what is today Randolph County, Illinois. Centrally located between the major French habitations at Cahokia and Kaskaskia and in the heart of the Illinois Indian settlements, the fort also provided easy access to the lead-mining areas just across the Mississippi River. Fort de Chartres I was replaced by another wooden fort in 1726. Eventually this fort was also replaced in the 1750s by the massive stone Fort de Chartres Ill, which, partially reconstructed, is maintained as a State Historic Site by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. After having been lost for more than two and one-half centuries, Fort de Chartres I re-emerged through a fortunate series of events including clever detective efforts by an amateur archaeologist, the discovery of an aerial photograph clearly showing the fort, soil chemical and magnetic investigations to pinpoint sub-surface anomalies, and finally limited archaeological testing. These investigations revealed the presence of two palisade walls, intemal pit features, and numerous eighteenth-century French ceramics, glass, gun parts, and brass buttons. This study reports the historical and archaeological evidence for the long-lost Fort de Chartres I and presents our first glimpse of the material culture and subsistence of this important French Colonial site. This work adds important dimensions to the growing body of historical archaeology of early French Illinois. Inscribed by Author(s).
