Hardcover w/ Jacket. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. The Talisman Press was a distinguished one in California during the second half of the twentieth century and this is one of their books that gained authority and notoriety. The book itself is in fine shape with the brick red cloth covering in beautiful condition and the paper label still unclipped and securely fastened. The dust wrapper would be better than good. There is edge wear around the perimeter of the jacket and there is some tearing at the spine folds. There appears to be some darkening to the jacket spine possibly due to sunning. The price is unclipped. The limitation page in the back notes that this edition was limited to 750 copies. The pre-publication prospectus has been folded and laid in to the book. This volume reprints Edward Kemble's The History of California Newspapers which was first published in the Sacramento Union in December 1858. Kemble's work has remained throughout the years as the single authority on early California newspapers and this volume perpetuates his work. 398 pages.

An interesting and useful historical overview of California newspapers, published by the Talisman Press, a reissue of Kemble's work, originally published in the Sacramento Union on Christmas Day, 1858. The portrait frontispiece reproduces a daguerreotype of Edward Gilbert and Kemble, both early California printers and newspapermen. Publisher's orange cloth, printed paper spine label, decorative printed endpapers. Lacks dust jacket, otherwise a fine copy.

Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Limited. A very extensive history of early California newspapers with a mindblowingly thorough index of not only newspapers published between 1846-1858, but the newsmen who wrote for them as well. This printing was limited to a stated 750 copies. The book is fine, though there is a slight bump at fore-edge of book. DJ has a barely noticable closed tear at back. Time Tested Books has been in business for over 20 years and we have a great rep. We also have an open shop, so, when in Sacramento, stop in.

This is a beautiful book containing a reprint of Edward C. Kemble's A History of California Newspapers, 1846-1858. Edward C. Kemble (1828-1886) was an American newspaper editor and printer and journalist. Originally from Troy, New York, Kemble embarked on the journey around Cape Horn to California in 1846 via ship. After landing in California, he played a significant role in the operations of several early California newspapers such as the California Star, Alta California, California Call, and Sacramento Union. While the history of California newspapers was still in its nascent years at the time, Kemble felt compelled to write a history of the subject. His History of California Newspapers made its debut in the December 25, 1858 issue of the Sacramento Union. Edited with a Foreword by Helen Harding Bretnor. Back colophon: "This is one of 50 copies, numbered and signed, printed on Ticonderoga text, extra-illustrated with facsimile reproductions of eight early California newspapers, specially bound with black morocco leather and marbled papers. This is copy number 19, Helen Harding Bretnor [signature].".
