Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Quarto-format trade paperback, approximately 550 pages. Profusely illustrated throughout with over 300 maps, color plates, artifact photographs, site plans, and archaeological reconstructions. One of the most respected single-volume surveys of European archaeology, this richly illustrated refere…nce traces nearly 700,000 years of European prehistory, from the earliest hominin occupation through the emergence of the Roman world. Edited by eminent archaeologist Barry Cunliffe, the volume assembles contributions from leading specialists including Clive Gamble, Paul Mellars, Steven Mithen, Alasdair Whittle, Andrew Sherratt, K. A. Wardle, Mervyn Popham, Anthony Harding, Timothy Taylor, and Malcolm Todd. Chapters cover Paleolithic hunter-gatherers, Neolithic farming communities, Bronze Age societies, Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations, Iron Age Europe, the Thracians, Scythians and Dacians, and the transition into the early medieval period. Throughout, hundreds of color and black-and-white illustrations document cave art, monumental architecture, burials, artifacts, settlement reconstructions, and archaeological landscapes, making the book equally valuable as a scholarly reference and visual survey. This is the 2001 Oxford University Press paperback reissue, as stated on the copyright page. The work was first published in hardcover in 1994, followed by the first Oxford paperback edition in 1997; this later printing retains the complete text and extensive illustration program. The number line ("9 10 8") indicates an early printing of this reissued edition rather than the original 1997 first paperback. Near Fine condition. Clean, tight binding with an uncreased spine, square covers, bright interior, and no ownership marks. Light shelf wear and minor edge rubbing to the covers, with slight corner wear and gentle handling wear consistent with normal use. Pages are clean and crisp throughout, with vivid color plates and no highlighting, underlining, or library markings. Although published as a broad survey, this volume captures an important moment in archaeological scholarship just before the widespread adoption of ancient DNA analysis revolutionized prehistoric studies.

Contact seller5-star sellerCondition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket, As Issued. First Edition. THE STORY OF EUROPE BEFORE HISTORY HAD NAMES. Produced by one of the world's leading archaeologists, this ambitious reference work was created to synthesize decades of archaeological research into a single, accessible survey of Europe's prehistoric…past. Under the editorship of Barry Cunliffe, leading specialists examine the development of human societies from the earliest settlements through the emergence of complex Bronze and Iron Age cultures. Richly illustrated throughout, the volume presents a continent-wide perspective rarely attempted on this scale. Drawings, site reconstructions, maps, charts, and photographs bring ancient communities to life while documenting the archaeological evidence behind modern interpretations. The result is both a substantial scholarly reference and a visually engaging exploration of Europe's earliest civilizations. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Quarto; 9.5 inches tall. 543 pages with appendices and index. Illustrated throughout with drawings, maps, charts, and black-and-white photographs. CONDITION: New; No Flaws or Blemishes. Gift Quality. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - Published by Oxford University Press during a period of major archaeological reassessment, this work reflects the increasingly international approach to prehistoric studies that emerged in the late twentieth century. Under Barry Cunliffe's direction, it became one of the most comprehensive single-volume introductions to the subject available to English-language readers. Rather than focusing on a single culture or region, Prehistoric Europe presents the broad sweep of European prehistory as an interconnected story of migration, innovation, trade, and cultural exchange. The contributors illustrate how archaeological discoveries have transformed understanding of early farming communities, monumental architecture, metallurgy, warfare, ritual practice, and the formation of regional identities. The volume captures the complexity of prehistoric Europe while remaining accessible to general readers and collectors of archaeology, ancient history, and anthropology. SUBJECTS: European Prehistory, Archaeology of Europe, Bronze Age Cultures, Iron Age Societies, Ancient Civilizations, Archaeological Discoveries, Human Migration, Material Culture, Archaeology, Ancient History, Anthropology, European Studies, Reference.
