Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. T.E. LAWRENCE BY HIS FRIENDS EDITED BY A.W. LAWRENCE 1937 1ST EDITION. I had hesitated to list this book despite the fact that it is relatively scarce in the book trade and that books about T.E. Lawrence are usually sought after. This particular copy, however, of: T.E. Lawrence By His Friends , edited by his brother A.W. Lawrence, is annotated in pencil by a convict serving time in the Onondaga County (NY) Penitentiary in the late 1930 s, and writing in both English and German, and apparently in code! So if this prospect intrigues you, and you are interested in an in-depth look at Lawrence of Arabia by his many friends, this is the book for you. This medium-sized hard cover book (6 ¼ x 9 ¼ inches, 538 pages) was published by Doubleday, Doran and Company of Garden City, New York dated 1937 and the First Edition (so stated although more correctly it should have been stated as the First American Edition because it was also published by Jonathan Cape in the U.K. that same year). The book is bound in burnt orange cloth with embossed, gilt initials on the cover and a black & gilt title panel and gilt decorations on the spine. There is a Frontispiece b&w photo of T.E. Lawrence and 7 other b&w photos mostly of Lawrence, interspersed in the text. Condition: This book is in very good condition, except for the fact that there is a considerable amount of penciled notations by the convict mentioned above (there is a back-story which might intrique the curious). The hard covers are a bit dust-dulled and lightly bumped. There is a dark streak to the upper quadrant of the front cover, but it looks to me as though it was something that happened during the binding process. Inside, a former owner (our convict annotator) has left his name and address on the front endpaper. There are a few things, related somehow to the convict s situation laid-in, one some newspaper clippings which have stained the pages in which they are held. In general though, the interior pages are clean (except for the annotations) and without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact but the binding is cracked at the first blank page although it still feels tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Language: ENG.
