Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First paperback edition. 21.5 × 14cm, 256pp. The period of the first world war and its aftermath produced in Britain one outstanding working-class leader, John MacLean. This is the first published collection of essays, articles, pamphlets, and letters by the revolutionary organiser and educator of Clydeside, who along with Karl Liebknecht was appointed an honorary president of the first congress of Russian Soviets for his work against the war. Extending from 1902 until his death in 1923, this collection includes both his journalism from the socialist press of the period, concerning the day-to-day struggles of the working-class movement, and the longer pieces in which he set out his ideas on the rich and crucial world developments of that era. Included in this volume are important documents on the Irish fight for independence and socialism, the Russian revolution, India and American imperialism; on the wartime munitions workers' strikes, the growth of the shop stewards' movement and the revolutionary struggles of 1919 in Britain; on housing, inflation, and unemployment; on working-class education; and on the debates within the British labour movement of the period. It also contains nearly all of MacLean's writing on the Scottish question, illustrating his fight against English imperialism and for a Scottish workers' republic. Condition: A good reading copy. There is tanning to the pages throughout and a previous owner's inscription to the ffep.
