Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. About The Book : In the ever-increasing mass of literature which has been devoted to the criticism and appreciation of Indian thought, a tendency to extremes has constantly manifested itself. On the one hand we find amongst outside critics signs of a disposition to undervalue the results of India speculation. Over- zealous attempts are sometimes made to derive from alien sources the most important elements in Oriental philosophy, and when such attempts are shown by serious scholars to be almost altogether impossible, recourse is taken to a superior and slightly patronizing attitude in which, no doubt, expressions of depreciation are politely avoided, but the place of genuine and sympathetic appreciation is occupied by intermittent ejaculations of wonder as to how a people who have not had the benefits of the cultural inheritance which the superior critics themselves enjoy, should have been capable of so much as has actually been accomplished in India.A study of the Vedanta leads to many general reflections on the relations between philosophy and religion, and in particular to the questions how far such a philosophy can satisfy religious needs and how far it can be regarded as a preparation for Christianity About The Author : W.S. Urquhart associated with Scottish churches college, Calcutta in the early 20th century. He has made some comparisons between the Vedanta and modern philosophical thought; anticipation of Vedantie Ideas in the Upanishads. The author made it clear that in the Vedanta, as well as in other Indian philosophies, we may notice a remarkable unity of development more closely than in Western philosophy. A Presentation Copy from Kinfauns Castle, with Documented Moray Estate Provenance Auld Perth: Being the Book of the Faire in Aid of the City and County Conservative Club. Edited by Dr. Urquhart. Perth, 1906. (All Rights Reserved). 201 pp. Octavo [10.25 x 6.5 inches]. Illustrated with all four plates present, including the folding map of Perth. English. Good. A locally produced historical and antiquarian compilation issued in support of a civic fundraising fair, bringing together essays, historical notes, and illustrations relating to the city of Perth and its surrounding county. The volume reflects the Edwardian interest in local history, genealogy, and regional identity, and was intended both as a commemorative publication and as a means of supporting the City and County Conservative Club. This copy is accompanied by two contemporary manuscript documents establishing clear and documented provenance to Kinfauns Castle, the seat of the Earls of Moray. Laid into the volume is a formal estate letter on Kinfauns Estates Office stationery dated 25 December 1922, addressed to the Earl of Moray and signed by James G. Wilson, confirming delivery of the book. Also present is a presentation inscription dated Xmas Day 1922 from Peter Baxter, Honorary Secretary, stating that the book was given in appreciation of a paper delivered to the Gaelic Society of Perth on The Family Records of the Earls of Moray. Together, these documents firmly link the volume to the Moray estate and provide an unusually well-documented chain of ownership. Bound in light blue cloth with gray paper boards. It is in Good condition. There is heavy staining and wear to the front and back boards, with rubbed and worn corners. Foxing is present internally, heaviest to the first and last pages, with general toning throughout the text block.
