Hardcover. Condition: Good-. Birket Foster (illustrator). First US Edition. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, red cloth boards with gilt text on front and spine exterior show spotting and soiling along with edge and corner wear, spine shows some sunning. The internal binding has hinge cracks at both boards but the text pages are good. Front and rear end pages of chipping because the paper is brittle. Front end page also contains original 1908 owner name and date. Text pages are printed on heavy bond paper with 25 plates tipped on brown card stock bond. Each image is protected with tissue guard and all have been verified as being present. No other markings found other than the 1908 signature, no bookplates, no library markings. Paper is toned due to age and there is some light scattered foxing present. No publication date listed for the Philadelphia edition but George W. Jacobs & Company lists the title as a gift book in the Publishers'Weekly of September 28, 1907 (page 932). Uncommon to find the US printing.

Lovely volume with many B&W PLates, depicting Jesus Christ, the Holy Family and the Apostles, by many Masters including Rubens, Raphael, Fra Angelico, Maddox Brown, and many others. Frontis Plate showsthe Madonna and child Jesus by Rubens, protected with tissue guard. Crimson cloth cover with bright gilt lettering and decorative border to front. Gilt lines, lettering and a little decoration to spine. Top Page Edges Gilt. 11 3/4" Tall. Spine colour a little faded. Some light foxing. Tobacco odour. Weighs over 2 Kilos so postage outside UK will be extra. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Henry Alken was a prolific English artist, famous for his hunting and sporting scenes. His work is highly collectable. Original cream linen covered boards with gilt lettering on upper cover and spine. Top edges gilt, others uncut. Printed on special heavy paper. Covers slightly soiled, overall VG+. Small bookplate. Large 4to. xxiv, 55pp.
