Bunkers of Rippleton In this book Optic's message is that groups in society need discipline, order and competent leadership to succeed. His genius is that he uses a 12-oared gig to make the point; a boat which requires absolute coordination and cooperation from the rowers. The Bunkers of the sub-title are a bunch of rebellious boys who make life miserable for many on the shores of an upstate New York Lake. After his son Frank has a run-in with the Bunker's, Captain Sedley, (a retired and well-to do shipmaster) decides to form a boat club for his son and his friends. In the course of learning to row the boat, they learn cooperation, discipline and courage and, of course, manage to outdo the Bunker's with their undisciplined and rebellious ways. There's also a little injustice and false accusation. The falsely accused triumphs in the end and is proven innocent. It is done so well that you feel like standing up and giving a cheer when the innocent is set free. First published about 1850.
