The poem tells the Biblical tale of the rebellion of Absalom against King David, but that tale is an allegory used to represent a story contemporary to Dryden, a story of Charles II and the Exclusion Crisis (1679-1681). The poem also references the Popish Plot (1678) and the Monmouth Rebellion (1685). Ref EE7.

With a Critical Introduction by Agnes Mure Mackenzie and a Foreword by Ivor Brown. Ane Satyre of the Thrie Estaits is a play written by Sir David Lindsay o…f the Mount, servant of King James V of Scotland, Lord Lyon King of Arms, and an accomplished writer of satric verse. Ane Satyre was first performed before the Scottish court at Linlithgro in 1540, and has been an outstanding success at recent Edinburgh Festivals. The present edition marks the fourth centenary of Lindsay's death, as fas as it is known, and also the fourth centenary of his last revision of the play, performed in Edinburgh before the Queen Regent, Marie de Lorraine, in 1554. The text, edited by Dr. James Kinsley, is based on the rare Edinburgh quarto printed by Robert Charteris in 1602 and apparently representing the version originally played in 1554. Account has also been taken of the transcript in the Mannatyne MS. of 1568. The text is accompanied by a glossary and notes. 236 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
