Dr. James "Bullie" Holmes (1804-83), received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, practiced medicine on the Georgia coast, served in the state legislature and wrote of his encounters with a variety of worthies ranging from Napoleon's brother Joseph to Fannie Kemble and Pierce Butler.

Marjorie Holmes (1910-2002) was an American author, journalist, and educator best known for her inspirational novels and devotional works. Before achieving fame as a bestselling Christian writer, she taught high school English and adapted literary classics for classroom use, such as her mid-century abridgments for Globe Book Company and J. J. Little & Ives. Holmes later gained national prominence with her faith-based novels beginning with Two from Galilee (1972), which reimagined the story of Mary and Joseph and sold millions of copies. Over her career she wrote more than 30 books blending moral reflection with accessible storytelling, becoming one of America's most widely read inspirational authors of the 1970s and '80s.

From 1869 at the age of 14 to his final voyage in 1921 the author traveled the seven seas in a variety of ships under sail. In this book he recollects the thrill of pitting skill and muscle against primeval forces, racing with unseen rivals, fellowships born, privations, starvation, misery and cold as well as pride in the stately sailing ship.
