[ix], 200pp., a colour frontispiece and 4 black and white plates. Sir George Mackenzie of Rosehaugh (1636-1691) was a Scottish lawyer, Lord Advocate, essayist and writer of legal, political, and antiquarian books. He turned his attention to the histories of the leading families of Scotland, ans drew extensively from the work of his fellow advocate, Sir Patrick Lyon of Carse. His 'The Families of Scotland' describes the armorial bearings and genealogy of some 170 Scottish families and many cadet branches. The work was never published, but Mackenzie left it in manuscript. Attempts were made in the 20th century to have the work published, and the present book contains a full transcript of one of the surviving copies of Mackenzie's 'Families' as the main text of the volume, together with editorial footnotes. Section 2 of the Introduction identifies 21 surviving manuscript versions of the work and considers their provenance, authorship and dating. Section 3 offers short biographies of the individuals involved, and Section 4 some editorial notes on the main transcript. The book is bound in the original dark blue boards with gold titling on the spine. The book is in excellent condition and the contents are tight and clean with no inscription.

He was convicted on all counts, sentenced to death, and guillotined three months later in Versailles. During his trial, Landru drew a picture of his kitchen, including the stove in which he was accused of burning his victims, and gave it to one of his lawyers; he had written on the back, Ce n'est pas le mur derrière lequel il se passe quelque chose, mais bien la cuisinière dans laquelle on a brûlé quelque chose ("It is not the wall behind which a thing takes place, but indeed the stove in which a thing has been burned"). This has been interpreted as a confession. (Wikipeadia).
