Intended for younger readers, this anthology assembles classic fables, myths, poems, historical episodes, and literary selections organized around virtues such as self-discipline, compassion, responsibility, courage, loyalty, friendship, perseverance, honesty, and faith. Contributors include Aesop, James Baldwin, Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Leo Tolstoy, Rudyard Kipling, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Anne Frank, O. Henry, Frank Crane, and many others. Rather than a single-author work, the volume functions as a thoughtfully curated introduction to world literature and moral education, pairing Bennett's commentary with full-color and black-and-white illustrations throughout. This copy is a confirmed First Edition, First Printing, supported by the complete number line 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 on the copyright page. The book was published by Silver Burdett Press, a Simon & Schuster imprint, in 1996. Book and dust jacket are in Near Fine condition. Binding is tight and square with clean, unmarked pages and no ownership inscriptions noted. Blue endpapers remain bright and unfaded. The dust jacket is unclipped and retains excellent color with only light handling wear and gentle rubbing at the extremities. The rear panel retains the original publisher barcode along with an attractive vintage Catholic Shop retail price sticker, offering a small period point of sale provenance. A very handsome collectible example of one of Bennett's most enduring educational titles. One of the overlooked strengths of this edition is its distinguished group of illustrators and designers. Interior illustrations were created by Daniel Clifford, Leslie Evans, Susan Havice, Beth Krommes, Sara Love, Ashley Van Etten, and Karen Watson, while the striking collage-style dust jacket features Karen Watson's cover illustration and was designed by Sue Kyong Suk Brooks. Beth Krommes would later become one of America's most celebrated children's illustrators, winning the 2008 Caldecott Medal for The House in the Night. This volume captures several accomplished illustrators working together before many reached the height of their careers, giving the book additional interest beyond its literary content. William J. Bennett (b. 1943) is an American author, educator, and former U.S. Secretary of Education. He is best known for compiling The Book of Virtues (1993), which became an international bestseller and helped revive interest in classic literature, folklore, poetry, and historical narratives as tools for teaching character and ethics. The Book of Virtues for Young People adapts that successful concept for younger readers, making timeless stories accessible to children while preserving their literary and historical significance.
