Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A handsome and increasingly uncommon first edition of this substantial reference work devoted entirely to the language, concepts, and writings of Aristotle. Designed as a scholarly companion for students and researchers, the volume gathers definitions, quotations, and cross-references drawn from Aristotle's corpus, with citations to the standard Bekker edition and translations by H. E. Wedeck, T. Taylor, and others. Theodore E. James contributes an informative introduction surveying Aristotle's life and intellectual development, making this an important mid-century reference for classical philosophy and the history of Western thought. Complete with bibliography and comprehensive alphabetical dictionary entries, it remains a useful research tool and an attractive shelf copy. Condition: Hardcover is Near Fine, with exceptionally clean blue cloth boards, bright gilt spine lettering, sharp corners, strong binding, and remarkably fresh interior pages. The top edge retains its original publisher's orange stain with only a few tiny specks visible. No ownership markings, bookplates, or writing were observed beyond faint pencil inventory notations on the front free endpaper. The original dust jacket is also Near Fine, complete and not price-clipped (original $7.50 price present). Light edge wear and minor rubbing are present, with a few tiny nicks at the extremities, but the jacket remains unusually bright and well preserved for a 1962 Philosophical Library title. The jacket is housed in a removable archival mylar protective sleeve; reflections visible in the photographs are from the sleeve and are not flaws in the jacket itself. An excellent collector-quality example. The copyright page bears only the 1962 copyright with no subsequent printings indicated, consistent with a First Edition, First Printing published by Philosophical Library in 1962. Thomas P. Kiernan (1933-2003) was an American author, editor, and biographer with a strong academic background in philosophy. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and completed graduate studies in philosophy at Columbia University before serving as a senior editor at Philosophical Library.
