Soft cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Photos included in listing. About the book As we inch closer to a dark new millenium, anxieties rise. The sense of progress and promise that prevailed so powerfully in the 1960s has been replaced by a nervous pessimism, centering chiefly around uncertain realities - econo…mic, political, environmental. This book takes this for granted and touches upon it, but its focus is the analysis of the anxiety itself: its nature, sources, substance, effects, and even cure. Its focus is primarily British/European and contributors include: Linda Grant on violence; Susie Orbach on psychoanalysis; Mary Midgely on ecology; and Michael Ignatieff on nationalism.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition ( 'First published 1989' ). Signed and inscribed by John C. Greene. Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy for sale anywhere on the Internet. The inscription reads 'For Jim McKelvey with high regard-- John Greene.' From the jack…et: 'This book contains a fascinating introductory conversation with John C. Greene (page 1-38) and an afterword by him that responds to the contributors' essays. The book will have a strong appeal to a wide audience concerned with the religious, moral, and political aspects of evolution.' Happily, both the book and the dust jacket are in excellent condition. You can see the front cover of the book in the 5th photo. It's exceptionally clean. That's also the case with the spine and rear cover. The black lettering on the spine is very bright. There's only a little bit of crinkling at the spine ends. The corners and edges are free of rubbing. There is a light crease off both the front and rear top corners. There is also some light spotting on both the middle and bottom page edges. While you can see the middle page spotting on the edges when the book is open, it has had minimal effect on the actual pages, with only a few early instances of a tan speck or two just off the edge, and only a few more over the remainder of the pages. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. There are some black-and-white photographs and drawings. All of them are in excellent condition. The pages look terrific. There is a sliver of a tan spot off the bottom edge of the signed page (see second photo). Otherwise, the pages are exceptionally clean. I'm not finding any other soiling. There are no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. A number of the latter pages have a tiny, very light, very vague top corner semi-crease, not much of anything. Other than that, I found on the two or three very light creases. There are no markings No attachments of any kind. And John C. Greene's signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I've always had it in a fitted protective cover. The jacket is very clean. I don't see any tears. The spine edges and the edge corners look very good. The flaps are in very nice condition with only a sliver of a spot on the rear flap's outer edge. The jacket is not priced or clipped. From the jacket: History, Humanity and Evolution brings together thirteen original essays by prominent scholars in the history of evolutionary thought. The volume is intended both represent the best of today's research in the field and also to celebrate the work of the distinguished historian, John C. Greene, whose historical writings have had a unique influence on this volume's contributors as well as the field as a whole. The chapters explore the history of evolutionary thought in all of its cultural richness over the last two hundred years. Using contemporary sources as diverse as medicine, literature, and natural history tableaux, and drawing on the resources of publishing history, feminist scholarship, and the histories of politics, sociology, and philosophy, the contributors offer new perspectives not only on unfamiliar figures such as Erasmus and Charles Darwin, Lamarck, Chambers, Huxley, and Haeckel, but also on many lesser-known participants in the evolutionary debates.' 'No scholar did more to humanize our understanding of evolution and to set evolutionary theorizing within the broad sweep of Western intellectual history than John C. Greene. His writings on Charles Darwin, his dialogues with leading evolutionists, his publications on race, social theory, early American science, and the historiography of ideas, and his generous personal encouragement of younger scholars for over half a century made him one of the few most influential historians of the life sciences of his generation.'--- The History of Science Society. Inscribed by Author(s).
