Between 1748 and 1751 Adam Smith gave two courses of public lectures in Edinburgh, one on Jurisprudence, the other on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres. When he became Professor at Glasgow University, he used these lectures as part of his courses in Logic and Moral Philosophy until he left the University in 1764. Before his death he gave instructions that all his papers were to be burnt. John Lothian discovered a set of verbatim notes of the lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres, which are here published for the first time. There is a substantial introduction by John Lothian. The book is bound in the original black cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with light soiling and the spine is slightly sunned. The top of the spine is bumped and nicked and there is a tear of about 1/4" on the top rear edge. The tear has been repaired and the top of the spine reinforced on the reverse with a strip of tape.…
