Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. New Cheap Edition. Wonderful Pictorial boards back and front - Frys Advert to the rear - with a plain cloth spine with three black 'stars' at the foot - denoting Volume 3 I assume. The boards are rubbed to all extremities but are so attractive! No Date shown, but Dr. Barnardo, a medical doctor whose mission was to help those in poverty, supported his philanthropic practice by editing & publishing children's periodicals between 1874 & his death in 1905. This series - Bubbles: A Volume of True Tales and Coloured Pictures - superseded 'Our Darlings' in 1894. So as this is Volume 3 it has to be c. 1896. Internally there is an insert over the Title page stating 'Volume III New Cheap Edition and giving a change of address. The layout of the book is slightly unusual in that it is both text and pictures and painting competitons and the pages are oddly irregularly sized some marks/small tears - but overall the book is reasonably clean, tight and bright with a combination of history, puzzles, biblical/moral tales, fiction, poetry, natural history, world travel and general informations, etc. Some pages have been repaired with archive tape, mainly to the blank side/bottom edges, and some pages are shorter than others, many fall irregularly. One painting competition has been partially completed. Advert endpapers. 300pp. Masses of wonderful chromolithographic (oil/stone colour printed) plates, quite a few child 'poverty' images amongst them. A marvellous period piece - not the best copy, but sound and overall good - Pretty Scarce. Regardless of condition this is A Delightful Victorian Child's Book. See Images. ; Smaller 4to 9" - 10" tall.
