Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. First edition. 220 x 145 mm, xii + 270 pp, maps, bibliography, index, end-paper maps. SIGNED by author on the title page with an additional three-line inscription, written by the upper edge of the same page, to a friend mentioned on page ix, further signed Edgar. This study 'probes the legend of that near-saint of folklore and history, Charles Sturt. Closer examination of old evidence, and a consideration of new, bring many surprises. For instance, his Murray voyage, its results half anticipated, was no revelation; he had seen no Peninsular war service; he falsified identities of some of his men, and allowed history to neglect most of them; his inept Central Australian expedition was largely a produce of obsession and selfishness. So, although analysis destroys the legend, synthesis creates a new man of him, more credible, more human, of greater depth and complexity, but still brave and worthy, if in a different way.'.
