Add to basketLeather. Condition: Very Good. First edition. The vanishingly scarce first edition of a hundred year history of the Manchester town since the inception of its popular local newspaper. The vanishingly scarce first edition of the 'Stockport Advertiser' Centenary History of Stockport: A Record of Some of the Stirring Events which h…ave Taken Place in Stockport from 1822 to 1922, with Notes Relating to the Early History of the Town, edited by Stockport Advertiser editor William Astle, with a preface by Professor George Unwin of Manchester University. Only one copy of the first edition is institutionally available in the UK, held at Manchester University. In full blue morocco. Contains a photographic frontispiece, and all ten other plates. Collated complete. This particular copy is believed to have belonged to the Sykes family, with the family crest on the bookplate to front pastedown. The family held the town's mayorship from 1822-1922. Celebrating one hundred years of the popular local newspaper, Astle decided to embark on a history of the town since its inception and how it has transformed. As well as being an insightful local history, the work also shows how English towns transformed through the Industrial Revolution and Victorian era. In full blue morocco. Externally, mostly smart, with a couple of handling marks to boards. Slight fading to the spine. Rubbing marks to joints and edges. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities, with a slightly cocked front board. Floral end papers are bright and clean. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with a couple of faint spots to first and final leaves. Very Good. Various (illustrator). book.
