Hardcover. Condition: Good. (17th Annual). (no dust jacket, as issued) [front hinge cracked (not untypical with these heavy volumes), small scrape along edge of rear cover (with about 1-inch exposure of board), bumping/slight fraying at a couple of corners, a little staining on the front cover; all in all still a decent reference/research copy] (B&W photographs, advertisements) Biographies, directories, statistics, surveys, etc., focusing primarily on the American film industry but justifying its "International" titling by including sections on the British and Latin American film markets. This volume was the last issued during World War II, which of course caused great disruption to the international film marketplace; as publisher Martin Quigley puts it in his introductory note, it was "the greatest period of social, political and industrial readjustment in all history." The sections of the book are: Who's Who (comprising a little less than half of 60% of the volume's 970 pages); Motion Picture Corporations (including personnel and financial statements); The Motion Picture in the War; Industry Facts and Events of 1942-43; Services; Theatre Circuits; Pictures (brief credits, release dates and running times for features, 1937-1945, with lists of short subjects and foreign film imports); Organizations; Codes and Censorship (including the full text of the Motion Picture Production Code); British Film Market; Latin America; The Motion Picture in Education and Industry; Theatre Equipment, Materials and Furnishings; Television and Radio; The Press; Consent Decree (including the full text thereof). Interspersed throughout are advertisements for both companies and individuals. **** NOTE that additional shipping charges will be requested for international shipping of this heavy book, or for Priority Mail service to U.S. destinations. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. (16th Annual). (no dust jacket, as issued) [good sound copy with firm binding (often not the case with these heavy volumes), light external wear but much cleaner that usually seen with this series, despite some minor staining at the top corner of the rear cover]. (B&W photographs, advertisements) Biographies, directories, statistics, surveys, etc., focusing primarily on the American film industry but justifying its "International" titling by including sections on the British and Latin American film markets. This was, of course, during the war, so the disruption to the formerly-lucrative European market was, shall we say, rather seriously disrupted; as publisher Martin Quigley puts it in his introductory note, the volume records the extent to which "the motion picture is earnestly, effectively engaged in serving both its audiences with entertainment of a high order and high importance in these days of stress; and serving, too, that same citizenry in the support of direct war causes in all manner of activities from the promotion of war loans at home to star appearances on the stages of theatres right behind the front." The sections of the book are: Who's Who (comprising about 60% of the volume's 970 pages); Motion Picture Corporations (including personnel and financial statements); The Motion Picture in the War; Industry Facts and Events of 1943-44; Services; Theatre Circuits; Organizations; Codes and Censorship (including the full text of the Motion Picture Production Code); British Film Market; Latin America; Theatre Equipment, Materials and Furnishings; Pictures (brief credits, release dates and running times for features, 1937-1944, with lists of short subjects, foreign film imports, and serials); Consent Decree (including the full text); Radio [and] Television; The Press. Interspersed throughout are advertisements for both companies and individuals. ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order. Hardcover. Condition: Good. (15th Annual). (no dust jacket, as issued) [good solid copy with firm binding (often not the case with these heavy volumes) and just light shelfwear, although unfortunately blemished by rips in spine covering at top front hinge (about 2") and top rear hinge (about 1")]. (B&W photographs, advertisements) Biographies, directories, statistics, surveys, etc., focusing primarily on the American film industry but justifying its "International" titling by including sections on the British and Latin American film markets. This was, of course, during the war, so the disruption to the formerly-lucrative European market was, shall we say, rather seriously disrupted; as publisher Martin Quigley puts it in his introductory note, the volume records "the status and affairs and people of this great industry as it functions amid the travails and disorders of war round the world," yet attesting that "there is working order and discipline in the motion picture, in both the art and the industry," and touting the book as "a document of achievement now and assurance for tomorrow." The sections of the book are: Who's Who (comprising about 60% of the volume's 1,034 pages); Motion Picture Corporations (including personnel and financial statements); Services; The Motion Picture in the War; Theatre Circuits; Organizations; Pictures (brief credits, release dates and running times for features, 1937-1943, with lists of short subjects and foreign film imports); Codes and Censorship (including the full text of the Motion Picture Production Code); British Film Market; Latin America; Theatre Equipment, Materials and Furnishings; Radio [and] Television; Consent Decree (including the full text); Industry Facts and Events of 1942-43; The Press. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. (10th Annual). (no dust jacket, as issued) [good solid copy with intact binding (often not the case with these heavy volumes), but with some edgewear to covers (including exposure of the boards at several spots)]. (B&W photographs, advertisements) Biographies, directories, statistics, surveys, etc., focusing primarily on the American film industry but also devoting quite a bit of space to the international marketplace. Sections: Who's Who (brief biographies and credits of thousands of individuals, which takes up 772 of the book's 1,250 pages); Corporate Structure & Financial Statements: Motion Picture Production Organizations; Distribution; Exhibition; Managers' Round Table: British Film Market; Foreign Film Market; Production: List of Product (films arranged by producing company); Distribution; Exhibition; Operation (incorporating Managers Round Table); The British Film Market; The Foreign Film Market; Theatre Equipment; Sponsored Films (The Industrial & Advertising Picture Market); Radio; Pictures (brief credits, release dates and running times for features released in the 1936-37 and 1937-38 "seasons"); The Press; Motion Picture Societies. (I find the "Foreign Film Market" to be most interesting, with its assessments of the film industries in numerous countries (and the prospects for American films there), on the eve of World War II. There are one- or two-page analyses devoted to these industries/markets: Argentina, Australia, Austria, China, France, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Japan, and Mexico -- but, notably, not Germany, which gets only a couple of short paragraphs in a general survey section, and includes the cautionary notes that "American product is at the strict minimum necessary to supplement Germany's insufficient production" and that "films considered by the ministry to be 'detrimental to German prestige' are barred.") Interspersed throughout the volume are advertisements for both companies and individuals. ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First edition hardcover, half-bound in orange cloth and black textured cloth, with black lettering on front cover, and silver lettering on spine, is in VG condition, having slight bumping and wear to corners, moderate edge-wear to covers, light staining and rubbing to closed page edges, and a very small area at the bottom of the back cover indicating some past moisture contact. This copy bears the SILVER-STAMPED NAME OF LOUIS B. MAYER at the bottom right of the front cover, indicating that this was the personal copy of the great motion picture mogul, probably in his office on the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer lot. Louis B. Mayer was the top executive at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Motion Picture Film Studios in Culver City, California, from it's inception (MGM bears his name) in 1924 until his retirement in 1951. A legendary figure, he made MGM the biggest and most successful film studio of Hollywood's Golden Age. The book itself is one of a series of annual volumes, the Motion Picture Almanac series, that were de rigueur reference works found in every Hollywood production executive's office. Performing arts. Film production. Reference. Due to the weight of the book, extra shipping cost may apply. DB.
