Beautiful cover design by Starmer. Egbert Van Alstyne (1878 - 1951) was a prominent American songwriter and pianist, known for his contributions to early 20th-century popular and ragtime music. Born in Marengo, Illinois, Van Alstyne started his career in vaudeville before moving to New York to work as a Tin Pan Alley song-plugger. His first major success came in 1903 with the song Navajo, co-written with Harry Williams. Some of his most famous songs include In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree (1905), Memories (1915), and I'm Afraid to Come Home in the Dark (1909). He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970. Earle C. Jones was a lyricist best known for collaborating with composers like Charles N. Daniels and Egbert Van Alstyne. His career, spanning from 1907 to 1913, produced several notable songs, including works with Daniels such as "On Mobile Bay" (1910). Tragically, Jones passed away in 1913 at the age of 35 due to typhoid fever, cutting short his contributions to early 20th-century American music. A note about the cover art : Some of the most creative and eye-catching cover art of the ragtime-era were done by one of the prolific, but elusive, Starmer Brothers. Their work was of consistently high quality and they were turning out nearly a quarter of all large format covers from the late 1890s to around 1919. The identity of the artists was unknown until an invoice was discovered with a printed heading describing "Starmer" as artist and medical draughtsman. Not much else is known about the Starmer family.
