B&W photos and fold-out map. A first-hand account of the Zeebrugge Raid, an action by the British in 1918. the port of Bruges-Zeebrugge was used by the German Navy as a base for U-boats, which posed a real threat to Allied control of the English Channel. The Zeebrugge Raid was an operation to block the port and thus prevent U-boats from leaving, by scuttling blockships in the Bruges-Ostend Canal. The exercise wasn't overly successful, but was promoted by Allied propaganda as a British victory, and 8 Victoria Crosses were awarded. The recipients of some of these were decided by ballot, and one of those chosen to receive a VC was the author this account - Captain Alfred F B Carpenter (1881-1955). In the Zeebrugge Raid, Carpenter was in command of the HMS Vindictice, charged with landing a force of 200 Royal Marines on the mole at Zeebrugge. He was awarded the VC, Legion of Honour and Croix de Guerre with palm. he went on to become naval aide-de-camp to George V and eventually he became Vice-Admiral of the Royal Navy. An interesting book with rare signature.
