Sewn wrappers. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Tall 8vo. Pp. 10. Printed wraps, sewn. Minor toning to edges. Better known as the "Steal Treaty." Following the discovery of gold on tribal lands, white prospectors flooded the region. Pressured by the U.S., some Nez Perce leaders signed a new treaty on June 9, 1863. The treaty drastically reduced the reservation's size by 90% to just 750,000 acres. Many "non-treaty" bands, including those led by Chief Joseph, refused to sign, arguing that the leaders who signed had no authority to cede their homelands. This dispute ultimately led to the tragic Nez Perce War of 1877. Scarce.
