Grand in-plano relié, édition rare dans ce format : 620x450mm, demi-reliure basane émeraude à coins, dos lisse avec titrage doré et en pied le nom de l'éditeur, double encadré sur le plat supérieur, gardes marbrées, 1f blanc, 1f titre, 1f table, 40 planches gravées en couleurs, 1f blanc. Cartes montées sur onglets : 5 cartes de géographies anciennes, 4 cartes de géographie historique et 31 cartes de géographie moderne. Géographe français, Auguste-Henri Dufour (1795-1865) n'a pas lésiné sur le nombre de publications historiques et topographiques. Il travailla longtemps en compagnie de Pierre Lapie (1777-1850), lui aussi cartographe aux cartes du Dépôt de la Marine. Bel ensemble de cartes rehaussées en couleurs, gravées par Charles Dyonnet, dont les échelles se différencient fonction des registres : en myriamètres, en wersts de Russie, en agachs de Turquie pour les ce qui est de la géographie moderne. Les lieues gauloises, les stades judaïques, les milles romains sont utilisées pour ce qui concerne les cartes historiques. Excellent moyen de renouer avec ces contrées aux noms disparus : la Romélie, la Turquie d'Europe, le Pays des Khalkas, la Perse, la mer de Candie, la Nigritie et l'Amérique du Nord anglaise. Plats frottés, coins émoussés, intérieur frais.

From 1850-1861, he held the coveted position of ;Graveur du Dépot de la Marine,; and in this position engraved numerous French naval and military maps. Dyonnet had a detail oriented and aesthetically minded hand and is responsible from some of the most beautiful French maps to emerge during the 19th century.

Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Measures 37" x 43 7/8" Beautiful oversize map of Paris, surrounded by thirty engraved illustrations of major landmarks. The map is highly detailed, showing street names, gardens, museums and other points of interest, with a numbered street index and guide along both sides of the map. Published in 1839, the map depicts Paris during the reign of King Louis Philippe I - prior to Haussmann's redesign of the city, commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III. The map is in very good condition, with elegant hand coloring, and fold lines as issued. Several closed tears to edges, and archival repair to left margin. Otherwise clean and bright. Charles Dyonnet (fl. 1822-1880) was a French cartographer and engraver active in Paris during the nineteenth century. Known for his exquisite craftsmanship in cartographic and artistic engraving, his work is most notably associated with collaborations on maps and city plans.
