Add to basketCloth. Condition: Good+. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY SIR JOSEPH DUVEEN. 4to, pp. [100] + 41 plates, plus 2-page facsimile letter. Original cream buckram, lettered and ruled in gilt. Edges untrimmed. Boards grubby and flecked with brown spatters, pushing to spine ends. Edges toned. Inscribed by Duveen in brown ink and a bold hand: "To my friend Oswald Birley, with kind regards, Joseph Duveen, New York, Mch 1928," some foxing, paper darkened at threads. Else clean. Good+ A significant artist-patron association copy of the sumptuous privately printed edition of Maurice Brockwell's catalogue of the English highlights of Henry Edwards Huntington's extraordinary art collection, inscribed by the art dealer and Huntington's personal advisor, and primary source of his British School paintings, Sir Joseph Duveen to his own patronee and "my friend", the British society painter Oswald Birley, whose portrait of the US railroad magnate and collector is reproduced as the book's frontispiece (the sole contemporary painting featured). The influential and contentious British art dealer and "art world power broker" Sir Joseph Duveen (18691939) assembled Huntington's collection of classic English paintings, featuring works by John Hoppner, Thomas Lawrence, Joshua Reynolds, George Romney, J. M. W. Turner and others, as represented in this catalogue, and including, perhaps most famously, Thomas Gainsborough's 'The Blue Boy', which Duveen had purchased from Grosvenor House, from the Duke of Westminster for an undisclosed sum, and sold to Huntington for the gargantuan figure of $728,800 (£182,200). It was Duveen who introduced Huntington and Birley (18801952), and indeed was integral to helping make the younger painter in America, providing his first solo exhibition in New York at the Duveen Galleries on Fifth Avenue in January 1923, as well as lining up sitters from the echelons of the rich and influential. In February 1924 Duveen made arrangements for Birley to travel to San Marino, California, to paint Huntington and his rather extraordinary wife Arabella, who was also a collector. The magnate "was so pleased with his portrait destined for the planned library and museum to bear his name that he asked Birley to paint a copy for his New York residence. The two portraits were completed by 10 March and then rushed to New York to be included in Birley's second exhibition Portraits by Oswald Birley (20 March3 April 1924) at the Duveen Galleries". It is this portrait that is reproduced as the catalogue's frontispiece: a success for both artist and art dealer underscored in this edition, with this copy inscribed, and presumably presented, by Duveen to Birley in March 1928, when the artist was again in New York for his third exhibition at the Duveen Galleries, 'Oswald Birley: Recent Studies and Portraits.' An important copy highlighting an important early C20th art world relationship.…

Add to basketA significant letter, filling gaps in the provenance of Bellini's Crucifixion, now in the Louvre. All that has been known hitherto about the painting's provenance is that at the beginning of the twentieth century it was in the Paris collection of the banker Rodolphe Kann, and that before the Second World War it was owned by the Florentine dealer Alessandro Contini Bonacossi, from whose heirs it was acquired by the Louvre in 1970. The present item reveals that the painting was acquired from the recipient Fisher [probably the auctioneer George Fisher] by the London art dealer Agnew, by whom it was sold to Kann. Nor has Murray's ownership of the painting hitherto been noted, and it seems that Bonacossi acquired it (as he did several other works) at the sale of Murray's collection in 1923. 4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged and creased paper. After explaining that he has sent the letter in expectation that Fisher has returned from a foreign trip, Murray continues: 'I have a little piece of news that will interest you. Two days ago I re-purchased (this time definitely for myself) your Bellini "Crucifixion". I have been very sorry ever since Agnew [London art dealer] sold it to that ignoble Jew (German) Kann [the banker Rodolphe Kann] that I was unable to purchase it then. | The subsequent history is curious. When the Kann coll[ection] passed into the hands of Duveen [in 1907] it remained unsold, partly no doubt owing to the subject & partly to its being unsigned. It requires happily for me an intelligent art lover to appreciate its beauty. Duveen presented it to Dr. Bode [Wilhelm von Bode] in recognition of his help in selling the greater part of the coll[ectio]n. | For some reason (monetary perhaps) he Bode did not present it to the Berlin Mus[eu]m. but placed it in the hands of his crony Volpi [Count Elia Volpi], here for sale. Volpi included it in an auction he had here some time back but not getting the sum hoped for bought it in. It has remained in his hands since.' Murray had 'long ceased to visit' Volpi, but after writing to him was 'well received. I promptly seized the occasion to re-possess myself of the long coveted treasure together with a very fine bust of a cardinal ascribed to Bernini. So both now decorate my picture gallery since yesterday.' He concludes by giving his plans for returning to London, and in the hope that 'Mrs Fisher is better'.…
