Bernard and Huette first published their illustrated manual of operative surgery in 1846, which was based on Bernard's work in experimental medicine, essentially a pioneering approach using the scientifi…c method and empirical data rather than deduction. He would establish and outline his approach in the important,Introduction to the Study of Experimental Medicinein 1865. This is a scarce and attractive set, and interestingly, OCLC only cites holdings (10) for this "second" edition. 2 vols, 8vos, 301, [1] and 340, VII, XVIpp (indices); with 112 plates spread between the two volumes, many of them bound in at rear, and several throughout the texts, with some folding. In German. Contemporary quarter black calf, spines lettered in gilt, green marbled boards, speckled page edges. Boards and joints somewhat rubbed. Ownership stamp of a Dr. Cordes in Geneva to title in Vol. 1, hand-corrections to title pages in both volumes. Scattered light foxing, else clean internally and nearly fine.
