Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Original textured cloth hard covers, with gilt title and decorative border to front. Yellow endpapers. Some fading toward edges & spine; shallow chipping to cloth along spine and at corners. Early San Francisco gift inscription from Horace H. Moore, who appears to have been Librarian of the Mercantile Library Association at that time. Otherwise clean, tight and unmarked. Very neat -- a sound and handsome copy of a scarce and fragile book. Illustrated on each page of text with charming woodcuts -- drawn by Charles Christian Nahl, and engraved by Durbin Van Vleck. An interesting 3-page introduction by the poet's father, G. M. Bourne, known at the time as a hydriatic physician, gives a determined critique of harsh discipline in schools and a plea for more "Phrenological" ones. Tissue-guard present at half-title. Collation: [3 blank leaves][half-title][blank leaf]vi,19+4[blank]pp. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Book.
