First published in 1721, the Defence was written in response to parliamentary discussion concerning the possible revocation of the colonial charters. Dummer was for some years colonial agent for Massachusetts and Connecticut in England. "[A] notable contribut…ion to colonial political thought, voicing the theory that, by reason of their contractual nature, these charters could not now, after the colonists had fulfilled their obligation by redeeming the wilderness, be abrogated and goverment restored to the Crown."
