In these annotated editions, Bell includes memoirs of the poets, and various notes and introductions to particularly famous poems.Volume I contains a memoir of Dryden by Bell and seventeen poems. Volume II contains twenty-two more poems, a preface to Dryden's fables, and the first couple of parts to his 'Tales from Chaucer'. Volume III contains the rest of his 'Tales from Chaucer', his translations from Boccace, his epitaphs and inscriptions, and his lyric poems.Four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of Volumes I and III.This work is scarce in a three-volume set. In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally generally smart, though faded to the spines. Small losses and shelf wear to the spine labels, not obscuring the lettering. Vol. I, 299 pp.; Vol. II, 296 pp.; Vol. III, 307 pp. Bound in original half green morocco over marbled boards; spine in compartments with raised band, decorated gilt with contrasting maroon and brown title labels, gilt. Endpapers and all edges marbled. Slight wear to extremities and a little… foxing, largely confined to preliminaries; otherwise a very good clean copy. An Edition of Dryden's poems with a long introductory memoir and careful annotations by Robert Bell (1800-67). Bell moved from Ireland to London in 1828 and made his reputation as a journalist and literary editor. His English poets series in the same format as the Dryden, was issued in twenty four volumes, 1854-57, and expanded to twenty nine volumes in 1866. A relatively scarce title, handsomely bound.
